Paige leaped out of her chair. "I don't see your feelings about my grandmother as any great milestone for me to overcome." She smoothed her damp hair back with one hand touching her heated forehead and continued. "I have no problem with that Dennis. I understand myself, and I understand the law. I'm not quite sure I understand you. I am not a softhearted woman, but you seem to be a hard hearted man." Paige managed a smile, surprised at the calmness in her voice. "A position working with you and the Senator will be a challenge. Let's talk about my salary."

Jessica sipped more champagne. "Mr. Winner, you don't know that."
"I've never, ever wanted to make the marriage commitment to anyone except you," Wade trailed one long finger down her cheek.
"Stop it Wade!" She brushed his hand away and moved away from him. "You've given my career a real boost and I'm grateful but --"
"But what?"
"I ... my career ... my independence. Both finiancially and emotionally."
"You still don't think you can manage both?"
